The Bride & Groom
Laenie and Richard Coomber, 24th October 2012, The Spa Hotel in Tunbridge Wells.
It all started with a trip to the ring designer! Richard took me there and told me that I could design my ring with whatever material or patterns I liked, and I even got to choose my own diamond! As you can imagine, it was very overwhelming but such an amazing and special experience! It also meant that we got to design our own wedding rings too!
Planning the day
Budget was a big thing for us as we really wanted a lovely wedding but without the big price tag! So we made sure that we started to book things as early as possible so we had a good choice of suppliers and knew what our financial commitments would be.
We made a list of all the important things to us (such as rings and photographs – the items that you have to remind you of your special day) and made sure we booked or organised those first, so we knew what we had to spend on everything else. I did lots of research by reading magazines and visiting wedding fairs to try and get some tips and help with budget planning.
The hen and stag nights
We both kept out hen and stag nights fairly local. Richard went on a golf day and then out to our locals pubs and clubs with his friends.
My friends and I were driven to Maidstone in a Fire Engine Limo that we hired (!) for a lovely meal and cocktails.
It does sound like a cliché but it really was the most amazing and happiest day of my life! Everything was so relaxed and all went according to plan! We were SO lucky with the weather as it was a beautiful, and surprisingly warm day for October, so we were able to get outside and have some lovely pictures in the hotel’s grounds.
We chose The Spa Hotel as it really did tick all the boxes – it was local, a stunning venue and most importantly it was within budget! When we went to visit the room where the wedding would take place we just fell in love with it as it was stunning. And it also matched our colour scheme of black and white!
I wore an asymmetrical dress which gathered at the side of my hip in a diamante cluster, and had a very long train. I loved it form the moment I saw it as I felt it was a little bit different than your traditional wedding dress. Richard bought himself a grey 3 piece suit from a tailor in London as we didn’t want formal tops and tails.
Our bridesmaids wore beautiful black evening dresses which they looked extremely elegant in, and our flower girls wore lovely white dresses with fur shrugs – very princess like!
We deliberately booked a venue where we could have the ceremony and reception in the same place, so we could save on transport costs!
Wedding theme/colour scheme
Black and white: simple, classy and most importantly – easy to source reasonably priced items from the high street to match the colour scheme!
Favourite wedding purchase
Our rings and our photographs! We felt it was important to spend money on the things that reminded us of our happy day on a daily basis.
The flowers and table decorations
I learnt a good money saving tip in doing my research – when placed in a vase bouquets can double up as lovely table decorations– so that is exactly what we did!
I had a beautiful bouquet of white roses, anemones, gypsophila and ranunculus decorated with black butterflies. They were beautiful.
We opted for a formal 3 course sit down meal. It was important to us to have a real family meal, as we rarely get the chance to do this, so we wanted to ensure that we all sat down together. And we managed to time it so we could see the sun setting out of Orangery windows which was a lovely touch!
We went for cupcakes with a small cake just for cutting purposes!
The first dance
We danced to Heaven by Do (also known as The Candle Light remix by DJ Sammy he he!) It was a song we both liked and felt fitted us and the day!
We kept our entertainment very low key as we only had a small amount of guests, so we had a DJ to dance the night away too. We also put board games out in case anyone wanted some quieter entertainment!
The memorable moments
It was all my favourite! From the proposal, to the planning, to the day itself ! It was all perfect.
We took our two children for a week’s holiday in a luxury hotel in Tenerife. It was truly amazing and we enjoyed every minute!!
I think it’s helpful to work out what aspects are the most important to you, and start there. Make sure you get that prefect, and the rest will fall in to place.
