The Bride & Groom

The proposal

Simon had booked a table for dinner and when we turned up at one of our favourite restaurants – which we normally only went to for special occasions – I have to say I got quite nervous and excited thinking perhaps tonight was the night he was going to pop the question!

However after having had our starter, main and dessert and no proposal I thought I had got it all wrong and it was just a treat for a nice meal.

We then walked through to the lounge for a coffee and as I turned to sit down, there he was down on one knee with a diamond in hand.

Planning the day

I probably bought every wedding magazine going for a few months – cutting everything out that I liked and after a few months a theme started to appear.

I also went to a few wedding fairs to get inspiration and to help get an idea on prices for things like cakes, flowers, rings etc.

I also spoke with friends who had got married to ask who they used as can not beat recommendations!

As soon as we booked the venue (about 18 months before wedding) we quickly booked up the photographer as did not want to risk her not being available.

The hen and stag nights

Simon was not really fussed about a Stag Do but in the end his Best Man and Usher got him and a few other mates down to Hastings Old Town (his old stomping ground) – I don’t think it was very pretty!

Me on the other hand was totally up for a Hen Do and my bridesmaids organised an amazing weekend in Barcelona.

The wedding

I have never felt so nervous and been so emotional but it was a truly amazing day and given all the rain we had had already that year I wasn’t too hopeful.

But the sun shone nearly all day and not a drop of rain and everything went to plan – if there were any issues we certainly did not know about it!

The venue

We actually found this the hardest part of all, as whilst we had an idea in mind of what we wanted nothing seemed to feel quite right.

Then after picking up A Kentish Wedding Magazine I saw an advert for Frasers so booked up an appointment.

Jo and Lisa at the venue were amazing – they were probably the first venue that asked us what we wanted from the day rather than supplying us with a brochure and a list of what could be done.

As we walked away, we knew that venue was the one.

The outfits

After seeing ‘the’ dress in a magazine and quickly finding a supplier who had this dress – I was devastated that it did absolutely nothing for me.

I actually chose a dress that the shop assistant had picked out for me – a very simple Benjamin Roberts dress with pleated front and a small pearl flower to the hip and a lace jacket.

I loved the fact that I could get two dresses for the price of one as during the day I wore with the jacket and for the evening I took it off and added some straps, giving it a really different feel.

The Groom & Ushers wore grey suits from Moss Bross. The Ushers had a navy cravat to compliment the bridesmaids.

The Bridesmaids wore navy cocktail dresses from Coast with an ivory sash – I wanted a dress that if they wanted to, they could wear again.

The transport

As we were having the ceremony and reception in the same place we decided not to worry about transport.

Wedding theme/colour scheme

We went for natural flowers with Navy as the colour.

Favourite wedding purchase

My dress – I just did not want to take it off! I still have it in my wardrobe and Simon often jokes that one day he will come home and find me sitting in it!

The flowers and table decorations

After a discussion with the florist I went for a bouquet of white/ivory flowers – germini (small gerbera like flowers which is my favourite flower), roses, freesia and bouvardia with small leaf eucalyptus and pearls – the bridesmaids had a smaller version of this.

The men had white germini’s for their buttonholes and the ladies had white mini roses and gypsophelia – I also opted to have the corsages with magnets rather than pins.

We had a few gerbera attached to the aisle chairs tied with navy ribbon and the table centres where a mix of fish bowls and tall vases – the tall vases included the flowers from the bouquet plus white lizzianthus and large gerbera.

The Food

Given the table option of large long ‘feasting’ tables we went for a relaxed 3 course menu.

The starter was sharing platters of Antipasti, the main was slow roasted shoulder of lamb in a red wine gravy with seasonal vegetables and parmentiere potatoes in rosemary and garlic, followed by a trio of desserts.

The cake

Simon does not like fruit cake so we opted for a 3 tier sponge cake – bottom was vanilla sponge, middle was chocolate sponge and the top was lemon sponge.

The first dance

It took us a while to decide on our first dance and then out of nowhere decided to do a bit of a routine with the bridesmaids – it was so much fun doing, although very nerve racking doing on the day!

The entertainment

We had a DJ for the night and in our RSVP asked all the guests to state up to three songs that would get them up on the dance floor. We then created a playlist for the DJ.

The memorable moments

Every last bit of the day was so memorable but I suppose the one thing that stands out the most was my brother’s speech – he was only 18 and so nervous but did the most amazing speech.

The honeymoon

We went to Dubai for three nights and Mauritius for 7 nights – the mix of a busy ‘city’ followed by a week on the beach was great.

Advice

Do try and take in as much of the day as possible – it really does fly by!

Don’t worry so much about all the little ‘bits’ – you can spend a fortune on these sorts of things but how much of this really gets noticed by the guests?

I think if you have a great venue, food and drink everyone will have a great time.

Choosing a photographer that you are comfortable with is really important – you can only capture those moments the once! Being with someone you are comfortable with I think helps you feel relaxed on the day and this will show in the photos.

Enjoy every minute of planning for the big day and try and not get too stressed – everything will always come together in the end.

Enjoy a day or two off before the wedding – this will give you time to check on any last minute items and allow you to relax!
