Julie & Danny's Wedding Story

The Bride & Groom Julie Wood & Daniel Lynes, 29th November 2008, Blenheim Palace, Oxford.

The proposal

Julie explains - 'Danny and I had gone away to Rome for 4 days as I had never been before. On our second evening there we decided, after a hectic day looking around the Vatican and St Peters, that we would visit the Trevi Fountain and have dinner nearby.

When we arrived at the Trevi fountain Danny told me it was a tradition to go up to the fountain, turn your back to it, and throw a coin over your shoulder with your eyes closed and make a wish.

I proceeded down the steps and did as instructed. When I opened my eyes after doing this he was down on one knee with the most beautiful ring..... It was like a scene from a movie as I hadn’t realised it was now pouring with rain and lots of tourist were clapping. Perfect!'

Planning the day

'We had an idea of what we wanted so booked to visit a few venues. I had decided straight away where I wanted but took the advice that I should still look at the others and not rule them out straight away. I suggest going to some wedding shows as you can get loads of ideas from them plus it makes for a great day out.'

The hen and stag nights

'The boys spent a weekend in Brighton playing golf, quad biking, and other activities through a company that arrange everything including hotels and dinner reservations.

The girls spent a long weekend in Lanzarote sunning ourselves and partying, plus a night out in London the weekend before.'

The wedding

'I didn’t sleep to well the night before, but felt fine in the morning. Heavy fog had set in overnight as it was November so I was I little worried about the photos but it cleared pretty quickly. The morning whizzed past so quickly but I managed to enjoy it and savour the moments.'

The venue

'I decided straight away I wanted to get married at Blenheim Palace; it is beautiful.

We stayed in a hotel just mins from the venue which was brilliant as we didn’t have a long journey and it allowed us to have one car to shuttle everyone to the venue in the wedding party.

Once we picked our venue they gave us a list of local suppliers which was really helpful.'

The transport

'We chose a white 1937 Vintage Rolls Royce. I wanted a sort of Bugsy Malone style car and I saw this one at a wedding fair and fell in love with it!

Plus the guys you get as chauffeurs are fantastic and are prepared for everything and anything.

After the ceremony we drove down the long driveway to the front of the Palace for some photos.... brilliant all round service, not just a car!'

The outfits

'I always wanted a winter wedding so red was the colour I chose for my bridesmaids. I had also always wanted red roses so it all matched.

My chief bridesmaid and best friend had a dress especially for her. I let her choose the style as she has done so much for me over the years and with the wedding.

The others were younger so I wanted something suitable for their age yet something that made them all feel special.

I wanted something big ish! I wanted a dress that was a little princess, yet ballerina, yet not over the top, something romantic; it took me a while but I found the perfect one!'

The flowers and table decorations

'I had always wanted roses and ivy but didn’t really have a vision in my mind of how it should look.

I knew I wanted a cascading bouquet and tall vases with roses and ivy.

The florist I went with suggested a few options and was so positive and made me feel so confident in her I let her do what she thought.

When I saw them on the day I wasn’t disappointed at all.'

The cake

'We chose a white chocolate cake with 3 layers, one fruit, one chocolate sponge and one vanilla sponge; this was to suit all tastes. The cake was covered with white chocolate and had white chocolate fans and roses all over it.'

The first dance

'Our first dance was to’ Ever I’ by George Michael. The song means a lot to Danny and I so it was a lovely moment.'

 The entertainment

'We had a DJ, but we also had a Frank Sinatra tribute act as we love all big band music. We also had a magician/entertainer for the kids during the speeches in another room.'

The memorable moments

'My new husband and his cousin sang ‘me and my shadow’ together with brandy’s in one hand and cigars in the other which was brilliant; proper rat pack style. There are so many memories from the day I couldn’t pin point one, just a wonderful day!'

The honeymoon

'We stayed at a place called Tilford Woods. It’s a log cabin with your own sauna and hot tub set in the woods. It was lovely and we stayed there for 2 nights.

We run a business so it was hard to go away for longer, but we are still planning a trip to the Maldives to make up for it!'

Advice

'Just enjoy planning it, make the most of it and have fun! Don’t stress and remember it’s your day and you will never please everyone so don’t try to! It’s a day for you and your betrothed so keep it that way.

The only thing I wish I had done is had a videographer to film the day as I have lots of lovely photos’ but wish I could hear the speeches again!'
